Snack Time by Paul Kirkby

Thursday 5th

We have a Zoom talk by Polina Plotnikova who will present her still life and flower imagery.  This is a talk not to miss. Polina’s images are fabulous. She will explain her unique approach to flower photography and how her technique is akin to portrait photography.

“ for every flower and plant that I photograph, I always try to find its unique look, study its mood and character, and ultimately unlock the hidden beauty of my models. While appreciating the natural beauty of plants and trying to stay true to their original look, I do not limit my point of view to purely  botanical. Instead, I try to lift a flower off its typical setting and put it into indeterminate space, where its beauty can be seen in all its  purity.”

You can see some of Polina’s exceptional images on her website https://www.polinaplotnikova.com/

SUMMER 2024 UPDATES

During the summer months when the club isn’t meeting we continue to have some activities in the form of our annual weekend away and a schedule of summer evening meet up events, details below……

AUGUST 2024

Our programme of Summer Evening meet-ups is well under way and club members have enjoyed being out and about with their cameras to a great variety of locations. A few meet-ups were cancelled/postponed due to inclement weather however we have been lucky with most Thursdays and many of us have enjoyed some pleasant photography evenings. Last month venues included Cramond, The Hermitage at Dunkeld, Edinburgh Festival, Dollar Glen and Dunblane.. A few of the evenings have been designed with beginner photographers in mind where we will have a few more experienced members available to assist with learning about camera functions and creative techniques such as how to take long exposure shots and ICM ( Intentional Camera Movement ).

If you have an interest in photography and would like to join us or if you would like to learn more about Kinross Camera Club and the planned activities and events please contact secretary@kinrosscameraclub.org.uk

All abilities of photographer will be made very welcome. You can even come along to a few meetings before deciding if you would like to become a paid up member. Why not come along on to one of our Summer evening meet ups and see if you enjoy it.

Our featured photograph this month is called ‘Ghosts On The Pier’ by Richard Dibley taken on one of our June Summer Evening meet-ups in Anstruther.

JULY 2024

During the summer Kinross Camera Club will continue its programme of Summer Evening Meet ups. Already club members have enjoyed being out and about with their cameras to a great variety of locations.  Last month venues included Perth, Anstruther and Limekilns and Charlestown. This coming month {weather dependant} we will meet up in Dunfermline, Blairadam Woods near Kelty, Dunning and Bo’ness. A few of the evenings have been designed with beginner photographers in mind where we will have a few more experienced members available to assist with learning about camera functions and creative techniques such as how to take long exposure shots and ICM ( Intentional Camera Movement ).

Our featured photograph this month is by John Davie it is called ‘Shells’ and was taken on Silver Sands Beach in Aberdour. A perfect shot for the holiday season.

JUNE 2024

Kinross Camera club has an exciting itinerary of locations which we
will be visiting during the summer months. So far we have had photography
evening meet ups in Kinghorn, Kinclaven Bluebell Woods, Portmoak Moss, North
Queensferry and Tentsmuir Forest. All ability levels are welcome at our meet
ups. A few of the evenings have been designed with beginner photographers in
mind where we will have a few more experienced members available to assist with
learning about camera functions and creative techniques such as long exposure and ICM ( Intentional Camera Movement ).

The featured images this month are macro and micro photographs expertly
created by our member Francis Principe-Gillespie who has also kindly written a
short description to give us an insight into his work.

The difference between macro and micro can sometimes be a little
difficult to quantify. As with so many instances in life a picture can speak a
thousand words. So to that end here are some examples. The first, a daffodil is
at the lower end magnification and arguably borderline macro. The next the
branch is a 1:2 macro that shows the emerging stigmas of Wych Elm flowers on a
small branch and the third is a close up of the stigma with the female
finger-like papillae that trap the pollen and the swollen male anthers before they release their pollen, definitely micro. These
images were taken to assist the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Scottish Plant
Recovery project
https://stories.rbge.org.uk/archives/38649 . Finally a link https://cleish.org/page7.html that shows a macro of a (sadly extinct in the 1840s) British butterfly
Lycaena Dispar Dispar that you can zoom into any part of to view it at micro
scale. This was made up of over 12,000 photographs and then assembled as a
mosaic. There are many different techniques used in these images but for
microscopy the biggest challenges are movement (both of the subject and the
necessary movement of the camera) and lighting. The rest is patience and lots of time to process the hundreds and often thousands of images.

MAY 2024

Kinross Camera Club will be heading South of the border to Haltwhistle in Northumberland for our annual weekend trip away. Beautiful Northumbrian castles, Roman forts along the route of Hadrians Wall and the fabulous unspoilt scenery will be our focus for the weekend. Lots of photographic opportunities in this fantastic part of the world whatever the weather.

Our programme of Summer evening outings begin this month and we look forward to a great variety of venues close to home where small groups will meet up throughout the summer. A few of the evenings will be dedicated to practicing specific camera techniques such as long exposure and intentional camera movement shots. Lots to enjoy as well as an opportunity to learn more about the capabilities of our cameras when out in the field with expertise help available from our more experienced photographers.
