Can I just come along to a meeting ?
Absolutely – e-mail us or use the “Contact-Us” link and we’ll get in touch with you with details about how to attend our Hall and Zoom meetings. Within the club season, we meet once a week and you can find out what’s on by looking at the club syllabus on this site. Visitors can attend two meetings for free before joining.
If you simply want more info or are unsure if the club is for you, feel free to contact us by email or via the website “Contact-Us” link.
What are the members of the club like, would I fit in ?
The club is lucky to have a really good balance of members within our ranks. We have a good mix of both men and women, the committee this year is 50:50, so it doesn’t feel like it’s a boys club at all. In terms of ages we also have a broad range of people in their 30s to members in their 60s and beyond.
Club members are interested in a wide variety of photographic subjects. Within the club, there are members interested in landscapes, travel photography, wildlife, portraiture, flowers and plants, and sports photography. There are many members experimenting with creative techniques and digital manipulation as well as working on traditional, ‘straightforward’ picture-taking.
Do I need a fancy camera ?
No, not at all. The club is for all levels of photographer. We have a wide range of members who have a vast range of equipment. There is a mix of film and digital users but of course these days most photography is digital using anything from a phone camera upwards. There is a tremendous wealth of knowledge within the club about photographic equipment and techniques, and if you’re thinking of buying a new camera or need some advise on how to use what you have or how to process your images, there are plenty of people willing to share their experience and expertise.
Does the club have a social scene ?
At our weekly hall meetings we have a break at half time where members can enjoy a hot drink and a catch up with others. After the meeting some continue their conversation elsewhere, perhaps the local pub. We also organise an annual weekend trip where some members stay together in a guest house or hotel and enjoy exploring and taking photogaphs each day. We also usually organise a summer outings event calendar where one evening each week members get together for a few hours of photography. There is also our annual dinner at the end of the season to enjoy each other company and hand out the trophies for the seasons successful winners. Feel free to come and have a natter with us.
I’ve looked at the gallery and I don’t think I’m good enough to come to the club ?
True, the website has a gallery of the competition winning images which, naturally, should represent the best of the members work of that year but we also have our Members Picture page which showcases lots of other imagery of varying standards from the many 100s of photos taken throughout the year. Do not be put off by any of what you see. We welcome anyone of any ability. Whether you want to come and learn and improve your photography skills or are just generally interested in photography and photos and want to observe, admire or simply socialise in our friendly environment, we cater for all needs. Please don’t feel intimidated. Should you want to get involved in the competitions then that’s why we have our foundation section so that you are introduced gently into the scene, no pressure. If you do start to enter photos then think of the competitions of a way of getting feedback from someone independant and using it as a tool to measure your improvement.
